Wet your hands with clean, running water. The water temperature can be warm or cold. Apply enough soap to cover your hands, including the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. Rub your hands together for at least 20 seconds, making sure to create a lather and scrub all surfaces of your hands. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dryer. If using a towel, make sure it is clean and changed regularly. If possible, use a towel or your elbow to turn off the faucet to avoid recontaminating your hands. It is important to wash your hands regularly, especially before and after preparing food, eating, using the restroom, caring for someone who is ill, blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
